Volunteers are an indispensable part of St. Luke’s. By giving the gift of time, you make a difference for our patients every day. From providing wheelchair assistance to supporting families in our waiting rooms, more than 100 volunteers play a vital role in the daily operations of St. Luke’s Wood River.
Qualifications and Expectations
- Complete an interview
- Pass a background check
- Complete a health screen and comply with St. Luke’s health policies and procedures, including a mandatory annual influenza vaccine
- Undergo extensive training
- Be trustworthy, dependable, honest, courteous, pleasant, and punctual
- Have a professional attitude and behavior
- Adhere to St. Luke’s values: Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence (ICARE)
- Adhere to St. Luke’s mission to “improve the health of people in the communities we serve”
- Minimum of 100 hours per year of volunteer time, roughly one four-hour shift each week
- Complete annual refresher training
If you want to truly make a difference in people’s lives, there’s no better volunteer opportunity than at St. Luke’s. We’re very fortunate to have many wonderful people interested in volunteering at St. Luke’s, sometimes more than we have service openings for! When we have an opening, we’ll call you for an interview. In the meantime, we’ll keep your application on file for possible future positions.
Most volunteer services are performed in four-hour shifts, Monday-Friday. We’ll make every effort to place you according to both your needs and our needs, your interest and your expectations.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
The volunteer role is extremely important at St. Luke’s. As a representative of our organization, you have an impact on our patients and their experiences with us.
- Volunteering is not “job shadowing.”
- We do not offer internships through our volunteer program.
- We do not create positions for your personal or professional goals. We have specific needs specified by departments that we assist in filling.
- No patient care is involved in volunteering at St. Luke’s.
- Before applying, please ask yourself, “Am I applying because I have a sincere volunteer spirit?” and “Can I consistently commit to one shift every week?”
The main opportunities available for volunteering include:
- Guest Services: Volunteers greet, direct and escort all patients and visitors, receive flowers, and provide discharge transport for patients via wheelchair.
- Surgical Services: Volunteers greet and assist patients and visitors to the surgical suite, assist family members waiting for patients in the surgery waiting area, and provide clerical assistance to surgery staff as needed.
- Infusion Services: Volunteers support the Infusion Services department by offering staff and patient support through various duties.
- Gift Shop: Also known as Retail Therapy, our gift shop is run by volunteers and managed by the Gift Shop Committee of the Volunteer Board. All proceeds of the shop benefit hospital services and programs.
- Pet Therapy: Providing comfort to patients, the volunteers and their specially-trained dogs visit patients and family members.
- Knitters: Volunteer knitters make newborn bonnet and bootie sets for all the newborn babies delivered at St. Luke's Wood River.
- Volunteer Board: The St. Luke’s Wood River Volunteer Board is comprised of volunteers and other community members who give their time to the hospital in a variety of ways. The Volunteer Board, through special fund-raising events, helps support hospital programs and equipment needs.
